Green Hydrogen
for a Stable Power Supply in Africa

GH-SAFE is developing a solar-to-hydrogen energy storage system for off-grid rural communities in Africa.

Africa has sunlight.
It lacks storage.

SOLAR IS ABUNDANT

but Africa has abundant solar resources, yet without storage, most of the energy generated is not used to its full potential.

Less than 20%

Electrification rate in the rural sub-Saharan African areas, which leaves millions of people without a reliable power supply for health, education and economic activities.

HIGH DEPENDENCE ON POWER

Health clinics, vaccine cold chains, food storage, and education are affected by energy insecurity.

DIESEL IS COSTLY

It is polluting and logistically difficult to supply in remote areas. Diesel-based generator sets often produce electricity at a very high Levelised Cost of Energy up to $1/kWh.

BATTERIES FALL SHORT

Solar-driven microgrids use battery-based energy storage, which is high-cost, has a short lifespan, and relies on critical raw materials that harm the African climate.

Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power

The GH-SAFE project offers a different path. The P2H2P system captures surplus solar energy and stores it as green hydrogen, which is converted back to electricity safely, cleanly, and at a sustainable cost for rural communities in Senegal, South Africa and Morocco.

Our partners

GH-SAFE unites 12 organisations from 9 countries across Europe and Africa, including research institutions, universities and SMEs, to ensure technological relevance and local adoption.

The GH-SAFE technology will be demonstrated in Senegal, Morocco and South Africa

GH-SAFE will address the social, economic,
and environmental issues

24/7

ELECTRICITY

Provide continuous electricity for rural households, schools, health clinics, and small businesses using stored energy.

-80%

EMISSIONS

Replace diesel generators with green hydrogen-powered systems that will drastically cut COâ‚‚ and local air pollutants harmful to the African communities.

1000+

PEOPLE PER INSTALLATION

Each system will power a community of over 1,000 people with 24/7 electricity that will supply power for refrigeration, agri-machinery, education, and healthcare services.

LOCAL

CAPACITY BUILDING

GH-SAFE will improve local knowledge capacity on renewable energy through a virtual summer school, community workshop for women, technical training and an e-learning course on renewable energy systems.

<0.4€

PER kWh TARGET

Provide reliable electricity that empowers women-owned businesses to operate efficiently, scale sustainably, and extend working hours in safe, secure conditions, thereby boosting productivity, income generation, and long-term economic independence.

GENDER EQUITY

women-led development

Provide reliable electricity that empowers women-owned businesses to operate efficiently, scale sustainably, and extend working hours in safe, secure conditions, thereby boosting productivity, income generation, and long-term economic independence.
