GH-SAFE will address the social, economic, and environmental issues faced by African communities through clean energy supply.

Recover surplus energy from solar, which would otherwise go to waste
Through a dynamic production of green hydrogen using a PEM electrolyser
Maximise system technical compatibility with remote Africa settings
Minimise maintenance by maximising the lifetime of the hydrogen storage system and minimising electrolyser degradation
Develop a safer system for Hydrogen storage
Use of a safe organic molecule easily storable at room temperature and pressure, and operates under mild conditions
Gender Equity
GH-SAFE will work directly with rural communities in Africa to assess energy needs, understand cultural and social barriers to adoption, and co-develop implementation guidelines to increase adoption.
<0.4€ Per kWh Target
GH-SAFE will conduct a rigorous techno-economic assessment in Africa that targets electricity costs below €0.40 per kWh and emissions at least 80% lower than diesel to demonstrate the environmental and financial viability of clean energy storage
Capacity building
GH-SAFE will improve local knowledge capacity on renewable energy through a virtual summer school, community workshop for women, technical training and an e-learning course on renewable energy systems.
Validate proof of concept for energy-free hydrogen storage
Develop catalysts capable of cold-start hydrogenation, and assess reaction exothermicity potential to provide heat for the process
Replication roadmap
GH-SAFE will identify the most viable geographic locations for deployment, map solar resource potential across Eastern Africa and the Southwest Indian Ocean region, and produce a replication roadmap for governments, investors, and policymakers to scale the technology across the continent.
